LAMENTATIONS of GERIATRIC HOCKEY
When we lace'em up there's something new
it just takes ten minutes instead of two
we hear old ankles curse our skates
for that persistant painful state
the beckoning ice is cold and fast
it doesn't complain or ask
how old we are on this fine day
it just whispers, hop on and skate away
I'm here for you my friends
enjoy me till the day ends
PART 2
When we were young some time ago
we sported lungs like great bellows
our hearts drummed like hippie bongos
and the game was taken for granted, ever so
Now that we're old we gratefully glide
and drift around with puck aside
we all pray for more speed today
but Heaven answers with...no way
we remember that in years past
we had no visors of plexiglass
we displayed stitches for eyebrows
as it was a badge of valor aired out
PART 3
Now, every collision of past years
sends us a bill from Medicare
our shoulders are weather stations
warning us of approaching conditions
our hips despise snow and rain
but carry on with irritating pain
and our groins, we can't discuss
because they've filed a restraining order on us
PART 4
The groups' youngsters fly around with bluster
and tape their sticks like fearless warriors
while we tape our wrists like mummies
ready to rest for an eternity
we just skate around full of Aspirin
and wear ICY/HOT on everything
So, lament not for aging us that be
but rejoice in the game you see
because the joy remains at age 82
and still lives in us like new
because in our minds it feels the same
as we hit lifes' lottery and won the game
