WinterStroll
January in its momentary stay
brings a frigid and shortened day
with glowing orb slowly rising
fresh pine shadows grow without pausing
sharp light replaces darkness
in the surrounding cold forest
My steps create persistent noise
My lungs in fresh air rejoice
Hidden chirps are heard clearly enough
emanating from solitary feathered puffs
I gaze straight ahead and check
rows of distant quivering thickets
that hide resident wildlife well
I hope for a glimpse of natures spell
Up a small hill and through the pines
Down the path and among oaks so fine
To the coursing stream below
a log for a bridge narrow
a log for a bridge narrow
covered by the morning dew
one misstep and disaster could ensue
Beyond, a dilapidated fence emerges
witness to the seasons ravages
Rows of maze with crows on wing
bronze colored tassels dancing on wind
I see widely scattered flying husks
take flight on blowing gusts
I hear whispers in open fields ice cold
in the distance, a broad open road
that winds among brown gentle hills
carry shadows that hang like curtains still
Along that dusty way walking slightly bent
I smell the river not too distant
I See smoke rising from nearby cabins
and hear the muffled voices of residents talking
Rambling toward the end of day
I enjoy this Winter stroll in every way
Who needs tomorrow, I say
When I have this beautiful day
