Hard Water
Pond ice hummed beneath my blades
and every stride taken began to fade
as they lingered on blue-gray glass
time stopped while moments passed
Above me in clear blue skies
a fiery golden token hung high
it warmed my freezing face
while glinting off my flashing blades
Hard water like a sheet of perfect silver
nipped at my exposed fingers
frost hung from nearby reeds like sparklers
while thin border ice invited disaster
Sharp metal carved this hard water
and the morning cold became bitter
as visions of a warm house that day
could not easily tear me away
Time passed as the sun travelled low
hard water creaked long and slow
as I stood there not wanting to leave
However, I would surely return in a heartbeat
